Selection Process

Those who wish to apply for the graduate program in Nursing at UFMG must have an undergraduate degree. To apply for the Doctorate, the candidate must have a master's degree.

Foreign students must apply and pass the selection examination in order to receive the acceptance letter, which is required to apply for a student's visa. Final acceptance to the program depends on fulfilling all other requirements that apply also to Brazilian students.

Master's program

Candidates must fill out an Application Form, indicating the choice of a field of research, among those listed in the program's website. The form must be printed and sent by mail to the Nursing Graduate Program Office, together with the required documents listed in the call for applications, also available in the program's website.

It is also necessary to send the candidate's substantiated curriculum vitae, with proof of all items listed in it, including diplomas and certificates, work experience, photocopy of articles and abstracts published in the past 5 (five) years, conference participations, etc. Candidates must follow the curriculum model available in the program's website or submit the CNPq's curriculum vitae (Lattes Curriculum), available at www.cnpq.br.

Knowledge of English is required. Foreign candidates, except those whose native language is Portuguese, must also provide evidence of Portuguese proficiency (Celpe-Bras). The following certificates of English proficiency are accepted: (1) CENEX-FALE-UFMG (Extramural Activities Center of the College of Letters) English Certificate awarded no more than three years prior to application, as per Resolution no. 08/2008 by the UFMG Council for Teaching, Research and Extramural Activities, with a minimum passing score of 60 points; (2) Test of English as Foreign Language Test - TOEFL, with a minimum score of 213 points for the CBT TOEFL; (3) Traditional TOEFL examination with a minimum score of 550 points; International English Language Test - IELTS with a minimum of 6,0 points, or First Certificate in English issued by the University of Cambridge. All of the above certificates must be within period of validity; (4) The program may also accept other certificates of proficiency in English issued by other master's or doctoral programs in Brazil, as well as certificates issued by other courses that are acknowledge by CAPES, as long as they have been issued in the past 3 (three) years and the candidate achieved a pass level of at least 60 percent of the full score.

Candidates will be selected by the members of the field of research chosen, and the selection process consists of two steps:

1st step: elimination and ranking of candidates. This step consists of the evaluation of the candidate's curriculum vitae (100 points). Items evaluated: a) academic background (30 points maximum), b) Professional and/or teaching experience (20 points maximum), c) Intellectual production during the preceding five years (30 points maximum), d) research (20 points maximum). All items in the CV must be documented and substantiated. The candidate who scores at least 60 points (in a scale from zero to one hundred) is considered approved and may proceed to the next step.

2nd step: elimination and ranking of candidates. This step consists of writing an essay on the topic of the candidate's research project; the maximum score is 100 points. The writing examination will take 3 (three) hours, and the candidate must write a three to five page long essay. The essay will be evaluated according to the following criteria: discussion of the research problem, relevance of the research, justification, text structure, use of technical vocabulary, appropriate use of language and logical sequence. In order to pass, the candidate must score at least 60 points in a scale from zero to one hundred.

Doctorate

To apply for the doctoral program, candidates must fill out an Application Form, indicating the choice of a field of research, among those listed in the program's website. The form must be printed and sent by mail to the Nursing Graduate Program Office, together with the required documents listed in the call for applications, also available in the program's website.

It is also necessary to send the candidate's substantiated curriculum vitae, with proof of all items listed in it, including diplomas and certificates, work experience, photocopy of articles and abstracts published in the past 5 (five) years, conference participations, etc. Candidates must follow the curriculum model available in the program's website or submit the CNPq's curriculum vitae (Lattes Curriculum), available at www.cnpq.br.

Candidates must also submit proof of proficiency in English and in one of the following foreign languages: Spanish, Italian or French. Foreign candidates, except those those native language is Portuguese, must also provide evidence of Portuguese proficiency (Celpe-Bras). Candidates must send 5 (five) hard copies and 1 (one) digital copy (Cd), in PDF format, of the research project related to one of the research fields mentioned in Item 1 of this call for applications. The project must follow the guidelines included in the call for applications in the program's website.

The selection process consists of two steps:

First step, elimination and ranking of candidates. This step consists of the evaluation of the candidate's curriculum vitae (100 points). The items in the cv that will be given priority are, in the following order: 1) scientific publications in the preceding Five years (40 points maximum), b) research experience in the preceding five years (40 points maximum), teaching experience (10 points maximum), d) professional experience (10 points maximum). The candidate who scores at least 70 points (in a scale from zero to one hundred) is considered approved and may proceed to the next step

Second step: elimination and ranking of candidates. This step consists of two evaluations: (i) analysis of the candidate's research project (maximum of 50 points) and (ii) oral examination on the research project and the candidate's experience in the field of research chosen (maximum of 50 points). In order to pass, the candidate must have a total score of at least 70 points in a scale from zero to one hundred. Points will be given according to the following criteria: a) analysis of the research project: use of language and clarity in writing (5 points), presentation of the research object and justification (20 points), methodology (20 points), relevance, project's feasibility vis-à-vis the doctoral program's duration of 48 months, and coherence in relation to the field of research chosen by the candidate (5 points); candidates have a maximum of 20 minutes to present their projects orally. The presentation is then followed by an oral examination on the topic of the project and the candidate's experience. The aspects evalutated are: a) knowledge of the topic chosen, argumentation and theoretical background (30 points); b) clarity and objectivity during the presentation (10 points); c) experience in the area of interest (10 points).

PEC-PG

The Student Program - Graduate Programs Agreement (PEC-PG) awards scholarships to students from developing countries that have a cultural and/or educational agreement with Brazil for master's and doctorate programs in Brazilian higher education institutions.

To apply for a scholarship

Online applications for master's or doctoral scholarships area available at the CAPES and CNPq websites, respectively. Before applying for the scholarship, candidates must have a letter of acceptance issued by the higher education institution where they intend to study, which proves that they are academically prepared for the program.
